  16. <p>Columbus' quincentennial provokes protests throughout Latin
  17. America
  18. </p>
  19. <p>    In the U.S., the controversy had raged so long and so
  20. intensely before the 500th anniversary of Columbus' discov . . .
  21. err, voyage to the New World that the actual day passed almost
  22. unnoticed last week. Not so in Latin America, where Native
  23. Americans constitute a majority of the population in a few
  24. countries and a large minority in others, and where cultural
  25. tensions between Indians, mixed-bloods and descendants of the
  26. conquista dores have long been severe. Two groups of native
  27. peoples from nearly opposite ends of the hemisphere -- Alaska
  28. and Peru -- met at the Teotihuacan pyramids outside Mexico City
  29. at the end of a month-long march to celebrate "500 years of
  30. survival." In the city, thousands of additional demonstrators
  31. danced and prayed on the Zocalo, the central square; still
  32. others hung a sign reading FIVE CENTURIES OF MASSACRE around the
  33. neck of a statue of Columbus on the elegant main avenue, Paseo
  34. de la Reforma. Mass demonstrations also occurred in Bolivia and
  35. Chile. In Buenos Aires some native people staged a three-day
  36. hunger strike that ended on Columbus Day in front of the Casa
  37. Rosada, the Argentine presidential palace. And in Managua,
  38. Nicaragua, a poster branded Columbus A BIG THIEF, MURDERER,
  39. RACIST, TORTURER, OPPRESSOR OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLE AND INSTIGATOR
  40. OF THE BIG LIE.
